The Explorer Scout Unit has been running since the formation of Explorer Scout in 2003, under the leadership of ESL Ian Caird and Bob Mcintyre. The Unit is not a part of the 12th Ayrshire Scout Group but has strong ties due to shared equipment and meeting space.

The Unit was originally known as the Prestwick Explorer Scout Unit, but changed it's name and neckie colours in November 2006 and also launched a Unit Badge
